Located just 5 kilometres from the turn off to Aoraki Mount Cook this is a perfect location from which to explore some of New Zealand’s most outstanding landscapes from the air and flying in this open air cockpit gives you the opportunity to take outstanding crystal clear photos.
The flight time is approximately 20 minutes and packs in a lot. Starting from Pukaki airport the flight heads up to Lake Pukaki on the edge of the Mackenzie Basin where you will be wowed by the lakes turquoise hues and you will see why its New Zealand’s most popular location from which to photograph Mount Cook. We then follow the canal to the Ohau A Power Station returning to the airport by Lake Ruataniwha and the township of Twizel.
This is our Classic Flight and the experience lasts 45 minutes with approximately 25 minutes in the air allowing you to soak in the incredible views. With 2 options to choose from the first that flies over Lake Pukaki, Lake Ohau, Lake Ruataniwha and the Lord of the Rings Battle Scene and the second option over Lake Ohau, Lake Middleton and returning via Lake Ruataniwha and the Oahu A hydro-electric power station.
If you want to visit a glacier then this is the flight for you and it gives you approximately 35 minutes in the air. Departing from Pukaki Airport we head west over the stunning Ben Ohau Range before continuing to the rugged Neumann Range where you will view the outstanding Glenmark Glacier at 8000 feet.
Get off the beaten track and explore Lake Benmore and New Zealand’s largest earth dam on this 45 minute flight. We follow the waters as they drain from Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki making their way to the Benmore Dam and the sea before we return via Omarama and the west side of Mount Benmore that stands at 6300 feet. We offer a free extra option where we land at Omarama for tea, coffee and muffins.
With a flight time of 55 minutes we we go where no other scenic flight operator does and is one of the best wilderness flights available in New Zealand. Heading into the spectacular Ahuriri Conservation Area we fly up this beautiful valley, above the Mt Barth Glacier and return by the turquoise waters of Lake Ohau.
Our opinion is that this flight, that lasts over 1 hour is the ultimate New Zealand adventure . We fly to the west face of Mount Cook and over Mount Tasman with unobstructed views of Mount Sefton and the Tasman Glacier. We continue over the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and return to Pukaki by the Ben Ohau mountains above the Dobson River.
