Yellowtail Kingfish can be caught all year round in the Bay of Islands and rated as one of the hardest fighting fish pound for pound and in this part of New Zealand the Bay of Islands holds many world records.
This trip is for fisherman that like an early start departing Paihia & Russell at 6.30 am with our first task to capture our livebaits of Kohera and Mackeral, once our livebait tank has sufficient fish, its off to the fishing grounds in the outer bay areas of Bird Rock, Cape Brett and a few other pinnacles that are renowned for good sized Kingfish.
Although Kingfish are caught in many ways we predominantly use live-baiting method, with the use of gimbal belt and harness making it more comfortable for the angler to hold the rod especially when these hard fighting Kingfish engulf your livebait …. and the fight is on!
we drift over the reefs and pinnacles with each drift taking around 15 minutes, so we normally suggest just two or three anglers fishing each drift to avoid line tangles (Which obviously delays fishing time untangling the mess) and hence increases our opportunities to catch more fish.
Departures 6.30 am to 12.30pm or 2.30 pm
