Travel in the footsteps of the early pioneers with ‘Golden Sands Horse and Wagon Tours’ exploring Barrytown beach one of the most unspoiled, wild and beautiful West Coast beaches you will encounter. Located just 18km south of the famous Punakaiki Blow Holes and 26km north of Greymouth this unique 21/2 hour experience will showcase some stunning scenery, with plenty of time for exploring and lots of photo opportunities.
So come and meet Murphy the Clydesdale, a cuddly gentle giant who will transport you on a 21/2 hour tranquil journey back in time at a nice relaxed pace. Learn about the rich ‘Coast Road’ gold mining and the pioneer heritage and be wowed by the incredibly beauty of Barrytown Beach. The trip gives you plenty of time to explore the beach which is the best jade hunting beach in New Zealand, forage for the greenstone pebbles which have been washed into the sea from the rivers and are naturally polished by the actions from the waves, boil the billy on an open camp fire on the beach and enjoy tea and damper bread
refreshments, enjoy petting ‘Murphy’, spot the local wildlife and take lots of photos.
The trips leave once a day depending on tide and weather conditions and if you would like to help to brush and harness the horse you are welcome to arrive 10 minutes prior to the departure time.
