Our Jet boat adventure starts at Goldfields mining centre heading south down the river into the shallow braided waters of the Bannokburn arm. This section has only been accessible by Jet boat since the construction of the Clyde dam and the subsequent creation of the lake Dunstan in 1989.
The trip then heads up the river and into the spectacular Kawarau gorge blasting past sheer cliff faces and giant boulders, as the river narrows the rapids begin to form, stopping at the foot of the mighty Staircase rapid before returning down river to Goldfields Jet Base finishing with a adrenalin rush of a 360 degree spin.
Full length, protective spray jackets and M.S.A. approved life jackets are provided. Warm clothing is recommended in winter however this is an outdoor activity so dress accordingly.

It was the lure of GOLD that brought the first settlers into Central Otago and the Goldfields Mining Centre is the perfect place to visit for anyone interested in New Zealand’s gold rush history, a special place where visitors can gain an appreciation of the life and working environment of those early miners who struggled against the harsh and sometimes dangerous conditions along Central Otago’s famed Kawarau Gorg
The Goldfields Mining Centre is reached by crossing a bridge over the stunning Kawarau River for entry into the historic village which is via the main building. Here visitors can follow the self guided walk past Chinatown, or join a guided Goldfields Experience Tour which includes a demonstration of the sluice gun workings and the stamper battery as well as plenty of educational gold mining facts and interesting information.
At the Goldfields centre has been preserved as an authentic mining site where gold has been mined for over 100 years and can still be found in the rocks & gravels of this unique area. you can spend several hours wandering around the old miners village investigating the disused gold miner’s huts and the historial sites equipment and its workings with the opportunity of feeling like miners in days gone by trying your hand at panning for gold hoping to see a gold chunk glimmering in the bottom of our pan …… you never know you could strike it lucky !!.

A one hour fully guided tour of the most accessible parts of the Goldfields Park. The tour starts at the visitor centre where you meet your guide for an introduction into the Park’s history. It then follows a track through sites of ground sluicing to the Chinese village and a number of early mines and tunnels dug by the miners. From vantage points above the park, visitors can gain a full appreciation of the enormous amount of work done by the early miners utilising water brought on site through miles of water races in the hills beyond the park’s boundaries.
The tour finishes at the Goldfield’s mine where a California sluice gun is fired up to reveal its awesome water pressure used to dislodge gold bearing ore, Next, the stamper battery used to crush the gold bearing rocks brought out from the adjacent mine.

For visitors with the time to explore. The Goldfield’s Park covers 25 hectares with many original historic sites. For the self-guided tour visitors are provided with a map of the park to enable them to explore at leisure. Those walking the park in this way can meet up with the guides on the guided tour to join in the demonstration of the mining equipment.
At the conclusion of all tours, visitors are provided with gold pans and shown how to pan for the elusive gold. Remember it’s “finders keepers” so this is your chance to “strike it rich”.
