Nestled in the green belt of Wellington and now over 100 years old these 13 hectares are dedicated to native treasures and endangered exotic animals with more than 100 species of fauna from around the world.
We pride ourselves on being a place for learning and having fun along with a belief in the need for co existence between people and wildlife. Some of our 500 animals are on the critically endangered list such as the Sumatran tigers and some are unique in New Zealand such as the Malayan sun bears.
Be part of a ‘Close Encounter’ with some of our residents. Meet Charlie the cheetah and learn why he is endangered. Learn about the big cats with the lion keeper where you get the chance to feed and train the lions. Meet the cheeky meerkats inside their enclosure and learn how they are cared for at the zoo. Get face to face with the tallest animal in the Zoo, the giraffe or get close to the cutest animals in the zoo and hand feed a red panda inside their enclosure.
After dark the Zoo becomes a very magical place so join the zoo for an exciting ‘Sleepover’ and get to see what the daily visitors don’t. Help to feed some of our amazing animals and learn how we keep them happy and stimulated. Snuggle up with your buddies for the night and sleep in close quarters with some of the cute critters that live here.
Visit our animal hospital ‘The Nest Te K?hanga’ where the viewing galleries offer a first hand glimpse of the veterinary team as they administer first class care to the animals. This is a truly amazing opportunity to learn how the animals are cared for at the zoo in a real working environment with no two days alike.
Wellington Zoo is the perfect location for your function or event. Be it a Christmas party, birthday party, family gathering or corporate event, you may have some very special guests who come and join your party.
