The Abel Tasman coastline is dotted with offshore islands that are forested and teeming with wildlife, from shags to an island inhabited by over 300 New Zealand fur seals! Previously, we’ve simply appreciated their beauty and behaviour (such as the seal pups in Whakariki, n’aww! ), but now Stu is teaching us some amazing facts about them, such as how shags swallow boulders to get deeper in the water and how seals can hold their breath for 10 minutes… It’s information that will undoubtedly impress our buddies in the future…
Coastal and marine birds may be encountered on our Eco-Tours. New Zealand is a paradise for bird watchers (or twitchers, as we like to call them). The Abel Tasman National Park is home to a vast array of coastal sea birds, some of which are extremely rare. What you will see will depend on the seasons and food availability. Some wading birds can be found on the same few metres of beach every day of the year, but pelagic seabirds may be a rare sight when travelling across a huge ocean. This is what makes each day in nature so special because we never know what we may encounter.
