Hosting more than 11,000 visitors every year on this 280-acre property that allows customers to ride uninterrupted from Glenorchy to the foot of Mt Alfred, and along and across the Rees River. Being able to ride without stopping to open a gate is unique for a horse-trekking business, and the ability to access an untouched landscape is a special visitor experience.

A delightful introduction to horse riding for first-time riders and hobbit-sized people. This gentle trek gives riders the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular sites of breath-taking Glenorchy as they build up their confidence on our friendly horses.
The route of the Hobbit’s Hack varies day to day, this is because there are simply too many wonderful places to go and sights to see, and we like to give our horses, guides and returning manuhiri (visitors) a chance to see as much of the stunning scenery as possible.
While we cannot guarantee the exact route you will take, you will be sure to see some of the spectacular Middle Earth locations where scenes from Lord of the Rings were shot, and you can rest assured that the views are fantastic in every direction – we are on the doorstep to Paradise, after all.
Our most popular product, a beautiful 2 hour ride at the head of Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand’s longest lake. This two hour long adventure offers spectacular scenery of Te Wahipounamu, the South West of New Zealand UNESCO World Heritage site.
Riding alongside braided, glacial fed rivers this adventure offers river crossings and spectacular scenery, including views of The Misty Mountains, The Wizard’s Vale and The Mighty Methedras.
Depending on the weather we will ride to either the Rees or Dart river valleys from our base at the end of Mt Alfred. The scenery in both directions is amazing and an unforgettable experience for all levels of rider and a great option for mixed ability couples and groups.

For the health and wellbeing of our horses and client safety we have a strict rider weight limit of 95kg/210lbs/15st. Please note this and provide accurate weights when booking. We reserve the right to weigh all customers on the day of the ride and if they exceed the rider weight limit, they will not be permitted to ride and a full charge will apply and no refunds will be provided.
