Aratiata Dam: Our visit to the Aratiata dam coincides with time time for the spectacular 10:00am where thousands of litres of water is released from the Aratiatia Dam gushing down through the Aratiatia Rapids that are believed to have been created from a volcano. The name “Aratiatia” means “stairway of Tia”.
At the Aratiatia Rapids, the Waikato River falls 28 metres in the space of one kilometre. These surging rapids have been harnessed to produce environmentally sustainable hydroelectric power.
