The essential introduction to Wellington! Jump on a bike and our guide will show you around the Wellington Waterfront and introduce you to some fascinating past and present figures who have made Wellington the creative capital it is today.
This tour is perfect for those with just a couple of hours to spare or who prefer to ride only on cycle paths.
Our Introduction to Wellington tour is set at an easy pace with plenty of time for questions and taking photos at each of the tour stops.
Our tour focuses on six city shaping people and we’ll introduce you to some key Wellington landmarks including the New Zealand Parliament, Wellington Stadium, Te Papa Museum, Cuba St, Oriental Bay, Wellington Railway Station and the historic Wellington Waterfront.
We use regular bikes for this tour as it’s mostly flat, but you can upgrade to an electric bike if you like.
Meet your guide at our store on Queens Wharf in central Wellington in time for a 10:30am departure. After listening to the safety briefing, enjoy time to practice in a car-free space before heading out. The tour is light hearted and fun. Meet your guide at our store on Queens Wharf in central Wellington in time for a 10am departure. After listening to the safety briefing, learn how to operate your electric bike and enjoy time to practice in a car-free space before heading out.
Once you’re comfortable, saddle up for a fun bike tour of Wellington’s bays and follow your guide along the Wellington Waterfront. Glide along the seafront, passing the lively harbour and the beaches of Oriental Bay- filled with swimmers and sun-bathers in the summer.
Continue along the Miramar Peninsula and leave the bustle of the city behind as you cycle along the scenic coast. Pause along the way at a local café before looping back towards the city.
Finally, set the bikes to ‘turbo’ to climb up to the lookout point of Mt Victoria for an unforgettable view over Wellington, the Miramar Peninsula, and the ocean harbour entrance.
The tour is light hearted and fun. We’ve been running these tours for more than 2.5 years and have risen to be the #1 Tour on Trip Advisor.
We use modern ‘pedal assist’ electric bikes- you pedal and the bikes smoothly ‘amplify’ your own effort up to 275% (our bikes are not throttle activated).
You can choose the level of assistance that suits you- strong riders only use the assistance sometimes and occasional riders keep the power level up high! This means that the group are able to ride at the mostly the same speed.
The bikes have more than enough battery to ride the whole way on full power.

We can recommend a great half-day route that takes you from our store on the Wellington Waterfront and around the bays to the Miramar Peninsula or to the Lyall Bay surf beach. We have a recommended cafe stop (a local’s secret!) with fun atmosphere, outdoor spaces and one of the best views you’ll find.

With so many places to visit in Wellington, we know you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to go. But if you’re looking for something different, then check out these options:!
Mt Victoria is only a 10min ride from our store and has a selection of Mountain Bike Trails from easy to expert. The top of the hill is also Wellington’s most popular lookout point with spectacular views of the city below.
Polhill Reserve is only a 15min ride from our store and if you climb to the top you can visit Wellington’s iconic Brooklyn Hill wind turbine and lookout. The trails down range from easy shared trails to bike only, expert downhill runs.
Makara Peak is further away but you can get there by taking the cable car with your bike to the top of the botanic gardens then riding to the bottom of the trails (1.5- 2 hours to the top) Once there you are rewarded with Wellington’s biggest selection of mountain biking trails. Depending upon your fitness level and how many trails you’d like to ride, consider upgrading to a full day hire.
Miramar hosts some great (although short) downhill trails- it’s a scenic ride from our store around the bays to get to the top. You drop into Wellington’s film making suburb!
Riding to Red Rocks is a scenic and easy journey. It’s flat on-road riding around the bays, then you ride a rough beach road to experience Wellington’s rugged southern coast. You might be lucky enough to see seals lounging on the rocks (mostly in the winter)…and the rocks are indeed red! Depending upon your fitness level, you might consider upgrading to a full day hire for this ride.
