Wanaka Bike Tours have been operating cycle tours since 2005 and have been recognised as the premium provider of cycle tours in the Wanaka area. In 2023 we were privileged to be awarded the Traveler’s Choice Award by Trip Advisor.
Our Lake Hawea to Lake Wanaka experience will take you around 3-hrs on a standard mountain bike or 2.5-hrs using an e-bike. The day starts with our experienced local driver who will collect you from outside the Wanaka iSite and deliver you directly to the start at the Te Araroa Track alongside the lake at Lake Hawea.
Our self-guided tour starts you right at the edge of Lake Hawea where you will follow the signs from Hawea to Wanaka alongside the Hawea River trail, the Upper Clutha Trail and the Te Araroa Trail which leads you back on cycle paths into the Wanaka township.
This ride is approximately a 30km ride which on a mountain bike is a relatively flat family friendly ride.
Time and energy permitting you can decide if you would like to continue riding further around the lakeside or just park yourself up outside the local cafes and pubs.
All of our self-guided tours include the basics such as bike hire (of course), a safety briefing, a helmet, a bike lock, a guide map, on-call breakdown (just in case) and we will of course pick up the bike at the end of the day. Your bike will have a bottle cage which a plastic water bottle (bottle/water not included).

The most premium biking experience in Wanaka and is designed for people who prefer small groups.
Your own personal shuttle driver will pick you up at 9am from your local Wanaka accommodation and drive to the lakeside town of Hawea to start your ride.
If you are keen to ride an extra few kilometers, we can offer you an extension to start from the Gladstone Track.
On the way we will stop and grab a complimentary coffee as well a sweet treat from the Pembrooke Patisserie.

The Lake Dunstan Trail is a scenic cycling trail that winds its way alongside Lake Dunstan with truly amazingly constructed boardwalk links which pass over the water’s edge on more than one occasion.
If travelling from Cromwell, the trail follows the Kawarau River from Old Cromwell Town to Bannockburn, and then through the Cromwell Gorge to the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club, near Clyde.
This cycle project started in 2019 and cost a total of NZ$26million to complete. Join us for this ride and experience why this we believe that the Dunstan Trail is the best single day ride in Central Otago.
If you are taking our Wanaka shuttle option then we depart from outside the Wanaka iSite (103 Ardmore Street) at 09:00hrs. An alternative pick-up point is Cromwell where we meet you at 10:00am.
From there we decide which is the best starting point for the day, either Cromwell or Clyde. Our local experienced drivers know how the wind blows through the gorge and therefore will advise you on the route that is most suitable on the day.
The ride is 42km in distance and along the way there are many highlights:
Please allow 3-4 hours for this ride, we will be at the finish waiting to either pick up the bikes and/or return you back to Wanaka. We normally return to Wanaka
between 4:00-4:30pm.
