Tucked into the heart of the Central Plateau, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe rise out of a dramatic volcanic landscape that feels more like another planet than a short drive from Taupō or Wellington. On the ground you catch glimpses of snow-capped peaks, alpine deserts and old lava flows — but it’s from the air that this dual UNESCO World Heritage landscape truly reveals itself.
A scenic flight over Tongariro National Park lets you trace ancient eruption paths, circle active craters and look down on emerald lakes, volcanic vents and rugged ridgelines that most visitors only ever see from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. From above, you’ll get a real sense of scale as the mountains, valleys and vast Central Plateau unfold beneath you, with your pilot highlighting landmarks, geology and hidden features shaped by thousands of years of volcanic activity.
Whether you’re here for skiing, hiking, photography or a classic central North Island road trip, a Mt Ruapehu and Tongariro helicopter flight is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience the region. On this page, we’ll show you what to expect from a flight over Tongariro’s peaks, introduce you to local operator Kaimanawa Helicopters, and share a few favourite walks and rainy-day ideas to help you make the most of your time — whatever the weather decides to do.
