One of Tongariro National Park’s best short walks, the easy 2 hour loop to Taranaki Falls is jam-packed with fascinating natural sights and excellent mountain views. A superb way to experience the Tongariro National Park and enjoy this stunning time of day.
The track is in two parts – an upper and lower – which form a loop with the Taranaki Falls around the halfway mark. Enjoy a refreshment while you take in the sights of the Taranaki Falls tumbling 20 meters over the edge of a large lava flow, which erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago. Your guide will talk about the area with their local knowledge of geology, volcanology and New Zealand cultural history.
Summer tours finish in the golden hour just before sunset, outside summer the tour finishes on or just before sunset. Clients can stay and watch the sunset lighting up a majestic alpine setting after the trip.

For a moderate challenge, we recommend our full-day private Ruapehu Guided Hike, where you’ll discover the highest of the three active andesitic volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park.

Please note that this hike is not on a track and may be less stable than the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
The hike commences at the Whakapapa Ski area atop Bruce Road on Mt. Ruapehu, with the option to take a chairlift up to Knoll Ridge cafe depending on the day’s group and chairlift availability.
Chairlift payment of approximately $35 per person is made to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts at the hike’s start. The lifts close daily at 4:00 PM, subject to deteriorating conditions.
Please note that a minimum of two individuals is required for this private tour, with subsequent bookings of more than two available at the standard tour rate.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19-kilometer hike that’s considered to be one of New Zealand’s greatest one-day walks.
The trail takes you through the scenic saddle between Mts. Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, showcasing stunning volcanic craters of various colours and shapes, mountain springs, and vibrant green lakes.
In summer, the track can be quite congested. At Adrift Tongariro, we take you away from the crowds to experience the main attractions while still enjoying the magnificent scenery.
During winter, you can wander around the spectacular snow-covered countryside without the summer throng.
Our experienced guides provide all necessary training and equipment, including crampons and ice axes, for a spectacular alpine adventure.
We offer guided Tongariro Alpine trips with the safety and well-being of our customers as our top priority.
Our guides assess the weather, avalanche, ice, and hypothermia conditions to determine the best path for the day. Please note that reaching the Ketatahi finish is not guaranteed.
We cater to solo and group reservations, with minimal numbers always met, especially on nice days.
Our package includes a guide or guides, transportation from the Adrift Tongariro base to the activity, and $40 worth of clothing and footwear rental (boots cost $20, while clothes cost $10 per item).
