How long is the tour?
About 3 hours total, with ~2 hours underground.
How many people are in a group?
Max 6 guests per departure for a more personal, small-group experience.
What’s included?
All specialist gear (wetsuit, helmet/light, tube, gumboots), trained guides and safety briefing, hot showers, and a cedar hot tub at HQ.
What should I bring?
A swimsuit, a towel, and a pair of socks you don’t mind getting wet.
Who can join?
12+ years (anyone under 18 must have a caregiver 18+ on the trip), 45–130 kg, and moderate fitness.
Do I need to be able to swim?
You need basic water confidence in moving water. If you’re not a confident swimmer, contact us before booking.
I’m claustrophobic—can I still do it?
There are confined spaces. Mild claustrophobia may be manageable with guide support; severe cases are not recommended. Please contact us first.
What happens if it’s raining or water levels are high?
Tours are weather and water-level dependent. We may reschedule or refund if conditions aren’t safe.
Can I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Yes. Most guests keep contact lenses in. Glasses can often be worn under the helmet—bring a strap if needed.
Can I bring a camera or GoPro?
For safety, personal cameras may not be permitted in the cave. Guides may capture photos when conditions allow.
Where do we meet and is there parking?
Meet at 754 Boddie Rd, Waitomo Caves (HQ). Parking is available on site.
Are there changing rooms and toilets?
Yes—changing rooms, hot showers and toilets are available at HQ.
Can we book a private departure?
Yes—private trips can be arranged subject to availability. Get in touch for options.
Do I need to disclose medical conditions?
Yes. Please tell us about any relevant medical conditions or medications (e.g., asthma, heart conditions) and bring required meds (e.g., inhaler).
