Enjoy a relaxing Llama Trek around Hanmer Springs, leading your own llama.
It’s a fun, educational and interactive llama experience taking in the immediate surrounds of Hanmer Springs village. Your friendly guide will give a short introductory session after which you’ll choose your llama and load him up with your belongings, leaving you hands free to enjoy the surrounds as you stroll along varied scenic routes.
We may take in forests teeming with birdlife, picturesque streams, scenic lookouts or native bush so there’s frequent breaks as needed to simply enjoy the surrounds or give
your camera a workout. Our leisurely pace gives your guide the opportunity to share their knowledge of the area’s history and interesting facts about llamas.
Each of our llama’s has a distinct personality so while you relax over our complimentary sit down lunch in a local restaurant there’s sure to be amusing tales to be shared and winning photographs to be compared. You’ll arrive back in the village in plenty of time to relax before dinner or enjoy the hot pools.
There will be ample energy food and rest stops and the hiking rate will accommodate appropriate physical skill levels; portions of the day will be available for rest and relaxation if you desire. Leading your own llama you’ll soon find his “calma llama” attitude is infectious.. Strolling along at a comfortable pace you can’t help but leave the everyday world behind. The llama boys are just as excited as you are to be in the wilderness and some will take up “humming” to each other, it’s a sound that’s almost as mesmerising as the alpine scenery.
Take a break for a hearty lunch and relax amid stunning alpine views with plenty of photo opportunities, wildlife spotting and learning about the native environment and area’s history along the way. After setting up camp we’ll wine and dine in the wilderness by the natural hot springs for 2 nights.
You have the second day free to do whatever you’d like. Bathe in the natural hot springs, take a walk to the old musterer’s hut or climb the mountain behind the pools for a stunning scenic view of the valley and surrounds. On the last day we’ll arrive back at our starting point just in time for you to enjoy an evening in Hanmer Springs with its choice of dining options.

Take a five day trek in the North Canterbury wilderness. Enjoy four days of leisurely walking with a rest day by an alpine lake. Get to know your llama, load his pack and lead him for the whole trip while spotting wildlife and learning about the area’s history and native environment along the way.
Maybe you’ll fancy a fishing lesson to catch a trout for dinner or prefer to enjoy a walk over the mountain to an historic hut, give your camera a workout, or simply drink in the peace and quiet.
This really is nature and solitude at its best … clear, starry southern hemisphere skies and pristine alpine scenery; this is the New Zealand wilderness you have dreamed of.
