Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are committed to ensuring that the Tongariro Alpine Crossing remains a sustainable, safe, and respectful experience. This iconic journey holds deep cultural significance and is set within a fragile natural environment that requires careful protection.
The increasing number of visitors places constant pressure on both the conservation efforts and cultural values of the area. Challenges such as overcrowding, waste management, environmental degradation, and a lack of cultural awareness threaten the integrity of Tongariro.
To safeguard this treasured landscape for future generations, DOC will be introducing a range of changes to better manage these impacts.
