Across the Bay from Paihia is the attractive sea-side town of Russell once known in its whaling days as the ‘Hell Hole of the Pacific’. Today it is more commonly known as ‘Romantic Russell’ and offers a relaxed atmosphere with lots of history, with the oldest licensed pub in New Zealand the ‘Duke of Marlborough’ and many other bars and restaurants along its foreshore. A great place to relax for a meal and sample New Zealand wines be it for lunch or in the evening as the sun sets over the Bay of Islands.
