For generations, Te Puia has welcomed manuhiri (visitors) from all over the world to explore the magic hidden within Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley.

Come face to face with the biggest, naturally active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere Pōhutu Geyser, and enjoy the up-close experience with the New Zealand Kiwi, in our brand-new Kiwi Conservation Centre. Be mesmerized by exploding mud pools all throughout the valley and gaze at beautifully crafted Māori-made artwork and sculptures visible throughout Te Puia.

Watch carvers and weavers demonstrate their skills at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, and hear our guides share stories passed down from their ancestors. Our wānga (school) is a lighthouse for indigenous culture, worldwide. We are honoured to open the doors to our w?nanga and show you the work of internationally recognised artists.

To complete your Te Puia experience visit the Taonga gallery and gift shop where you can commemorate your visit and purchase souvenirs, including Maori carvings, jewellery and authentic treasures (taonga).

Rotorua’s world-class guided experience and cultural performance

This exhilarating combo extends out from our Te Rā Guided Experience by offering a leading cultural performance in our beautifully carved meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua. It will include a Pōhiri (Traditional Maori Welcome), Waiata (Song), Mōteatea (traditional chant), Poi and Haka.

When darkness falls the true love story of Rotorua’s geothermal wonderland comes to life…

Geyser By Night begins at 8.45pm and concludes at approx. 11pm. Please allow 2hrs for this experience.

Until now, the magic hidden within Te Puia has remained a secret that only Mother Nature has truly been exposed to. For the first time, the geothermal valley is revealed under night skies, providing a multi-sensory experience that can not be replicated anywhere else in the world.

Meet with your guide at the Main Entrance to Te Puia under our waharoa (gateway). After a brief kōrero (talk), you will be escorted to Te Heketanga-ā-Rangi, our superbly carved and architecturally designed, Māori feature.

PLEASE NOTE:

Walking shoes and a moderate-medium level of fitness are needed and can be subject to the weather. Recommended Ages: 8 years and older (must be able to do a late night walk).

The Te Po Tour is a one of a kind feast of storytelling, entertainment and Maori cuisine. Be enriched with a deeper understanding of Maori traditions and absorb the unforgettable sights of this top Rotorua attraction at nightfall.

Highlights of this cultural evening experience

  • Taste an exquisite Maori feast prepared in the traditional Hangi style. You will be treated to an entrée of New Zealand mussels, corn on the cob, traditional rewana bread and dips, and a local drink made from kawakawa extract and manuka honey.
  • The Hangi prepared meals are accompanied by flavoured meats, chicken, lamb, vegetables and salads. A range of drinks are available to complement your meal including wine, beer, juices, tea and coffee. We recommend leaving room for dessert, as you will definitely find something to satisfy your sweet tooth.
  • After dinner you will be invited to board the motorised waka (people mover) for a journey Through the Valley Under Lights. Be awed by the magical evening sights of Te Puia’s geothermal valley. You’ll disembark the waka (vehicle) right in front of the Pohutu Geyser, illuminated in its full glory beneath a starry sky. Marvel at the sight of this glorious natural wonder, while your tour guide entertains you with traditional M?ori mythology and stories.
  • Be enthralled by Maori cultural performances, featuring traditional storytelling and entertainment. You even get the opportunity to participate in the graceful poi dance or ferocious haka, for a more intimate Maori cultural experience
