What to Pack for Your Queen Charlotte Track Adventure

Whether you’re embarking on a short walk or a multi-day trek, being prepared is key to making the most of your Queen Charlotte Track experience. The track offers diverse landscapes, and weather conditions can change quickly, so it’s important to pack wisely. Here’s your essential packing list to ensure a smooth and enjoyable adventure through the Marlborough Sounds:

Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or boots are crucial for tackling both easy paths and more challenging sections of the track. Opt for waterproof footwear if you’re hiking during the wetter months, to keep your feet dry and comfortable throughout your journey.

New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in coastal areas like the Marlborough Sounds. Dress in layers to regulate your body temperature:

  • Base layer (moisture-wicking): Helps keep sweat off your skin and regulate body temperature.
  • Mid-layer (insulating): A fleece or lightweight jacket is perfect for cooler weather.
  • Outer layer (waterproof): A lightweight, breathable rain jacket is essential, particularly in winter or spring.

Even on cloudy days, New Zealand’s UV rays can be intense. Be sure to bring the following to protect yourself:

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Hat or cap for sun protection
  • Sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV rays

Stay hydrated and energized during your trek:

  • Refillable water bottle to keep hydrated throughout the day.
  • High-energy snacks such as trail mix, energy bars, or fruit to keep your energy levels up, especially during longer stretches of the track.

Don’t forget these personal essentials for a comfortable and enjoyable hike:

  • Camera or phone: Capture the breathtaking scenery of the Marlborough Sounds.
  • Power bank: Keep your phone charged, especially if you’re using it for navigation or photos.
  • Insect repellent: During warmer months, the track may have some biting insects, so repellent is helpful.

If you’re planning to do a multi-day trek, make sure you bring the following:

  • Sleeping bag and liner: Essential if camping overnight.
  • Lightweight backpack for carrying your overnight essentials.
  • Travel clothes and toiletries for your overnight stays.

A basic first aid kit is a must-have for longer walks, including items like:

  • Band-aids
  • Blister plasters
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Personal medications

For those using our water taxi service, we can transfer your luggage to and from key accommodation points along the track. Be sure to pack your luggage securely and keep any overnight essentials easily accessible.

  • Pack Light: If you’re using the water taxi service, take advantage of luggage transfers to lighten your load.
  • Check Weather Forecasts: Before you set out, check the weather forecast to ensure you’re prepared for any changes.
