Embark on a historic return ride to the site of the Kopuawhara rail tragedy of 1938.
Your adventure begins with a spectacular coastal ride along the seaside, then moves through the Mahanga wetlands where abundant wildlife awaits.
The route gently ascends through native bush alongside the Kopuawhara stream. A short tunnel then leads you across the breathtaking 165m long Kopuawhara viaduct before reaching the monument that commemorates the lives lost during the railway’s construction in 1938.
The total journey covers 24 km.

Wear sturdy enclosed footwear (no jandals), dress for the weather, and bring a water bottle. Cameras are highly recommended, and for the longer tours it’s a good idea to bring snacks or refreshments. Rail bikes include storage baskets and carry bags for personal belongings.
