Step aboard the beautifully restored Paddle Steamer Waimarie and enjoy one of New Zealand’s most unique heritage river cruises. As the country’s last authentic coal-fired paddle steamer still operating, the Waimarie offers a relaxing journey along the scenic Whanganui River while bringing the region’s riverboat history back to life.
Originally built in London in 1899 by Yarrow & Co., the vessel was shipped to New Zealand in kitset form before being assembled in Whanganui and launched in 1900. Renamed Waimarie, meaning “peaceful waters,” the paddle steamer quickly became an important transport link carrying passengers, cargo and mail between Whanganui and river communities such as Pipiriki.
Passengers today can experience the atmosphere of early river travel while enjoying peaceful riverside scenery, native bush and historic river landmarks. Watch the original steam engine in action, hear the rhythm of the paddle wheels and discover fascinating stories about life on the Whanganui River during the early 1900s.
After retiring from service in 1949, the Waimarie later sank at its moorings and remained underwater for decades before an extraordinary community restoration project brought the vessel back to life in the 1990s. Relaunched in 2000, the paddle steamer once again became one of Whanganui’s most iconic attractions.
Perfect for couples, families, history enthusiasts and visitors exploring the lower North Island, the Paddle Steamer Waimarie offers a memorable blend of heritage, scenery and authentic New Zealand river history.
