Alpacas are beautiful and mysterious animals with a long and fascinating history and Shamarra Alpaca farm, located only 20 minutes from Akaroa, is home to a herd of over 100 alpacas. The farm offers breathtaking panoramic views from the Akaroa Heads to the south, and all the way to Barry’s Bay at the north end of the harbour.
Take a one hour tour with a difference, get up close and personal to an alpaca and grab the opportunity to lead one. Beverages and home baked biscuits are served at the barn and The Alpaca Shop offers a range of 100% alpaca knitwear exclusive to Shamarra, all in natural colours.
After driving up to the big red barn you’ll enjoy stunning sights of the harbour before beginning the tour with an interesting, informative and interactive presentation about alpacas and their exquisite fibre. Frank and Anya have farmed alpacas since 2004, after moving to New Zealand from the Caribbean, they are passionate about their alpacas and look forward to sharing their considerable knowledge with you.
Our friendly alpacas will be in pens for you to get up close to and appreciate their unique characteristics and their ultra fine fleece. Walk an alpaca among our herd while these majestic animals graze with their young and you will have an opportunity to lead an alpaca as you can take a wander around the paddocks and get to enjoy these
majestic creatures grazing contentedly in their natural environment. Each alpaca has a name, and Anya remembers them all!
