Classic Schooner Sailing Experience in Mercury Bay
Windborne is a magnificent 62-foot gaff-rigged topsail schooner, rich in character, charm and maritime history. Originally launched in 1928 and lovingly rebuilt in New Zealand in 1981, she blends the finest traditions of classic sailing with the comfort and safety of a modern vessel.
Whether you’re joining a relaxed day sail, a magical sunset cruise or booking a private charter, stepping aboard Windborne is a truly authentic sailing experience. Departing from Whitianga Wharf, the sails are hoisted and the schooner glides across Mercury Bay under wind power, offering a timeless way to explore the Coromandel coastline.
Guests are welcome to help trim the sails and take part in traditional sailing, or simply unwind on deck and enjoy the scenery. Departing from Whitianga Wharf at 10:00 am, Windborne sets sail across the sparkling waters of Mercury Bay for a full day of classic schooner sailing. Once the sails are raised, you’ll glide toward some of the Coromandel’s most spectacular coastal landmarks including Cathedral Cove, Devil’s Point, Pink Beach and the famous Hole in the Wall.
Guests are welcome to take part in trimming the sails or simply relax on deck and enjoy the scenery. Around midday, we anchor in a sheltered bay for lunch, swimming and snorkelling before setting sail once more. Keep watch for dolphins, whales and abundant marine life as the schooner returns to Whitianga in the afternoon.

Weather permitting, we anchor at Peach Grove, often enjoying the beach in peaceful seclusion. Swim or paddleboard ashore in crystal-clear water, walk along pristine sands, or explore bush tracks leading to a beautiful waterfall and freshwater pool. Native birdlife including kākā and tūī are commonly seen, along with dolphins and seabirds throughout the day.
