The Historic Paddle Steamer Waimarie – A Timeless Icon of the Whanganui River

The Paddle Steamer Waimarie is a priceless piece of New Zealand’s maritime history, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the golden age of river travel. As the country’s only authentic coal-fired paddle steamer still in operation, this beautifully restored vessel continues to cruise the scenic Whanganui River, much like it did over a century ago.

Built in 1899 – A Journey from London to Whanganui

Originally constructed in 1899 by Yarrow & Co. in London, the paddle steamer was shipped in kitset form to New Zealand. Upon arrival, it was meticulously assembled in Whanganui before launching in 1900 under the name PS Aotea. Later renamed Waimarie—a Māori word meaning peaceful waters—the vessel quickly became a lifeline for communities along the Whanganui River.

A Vital Transport Route for Nearly 50 Years

For nearly five decades, the Paddle Steamer Waimarie played a crucial role in transporting passengers, cargo, and mail between Whanganui and Pipiriki. Before modern roads and bridges, the river was the primary travel route, and Waimarie was at the heart of trade and daily life in the region.

However, as road infrastructure improved and river transport declined, the steamer was retired in 1949. Just a few years later, in 1952, the vessel sank at its moorings, disappearing beneath the river where it remained lost for almost 40 years.

The Remarkable Restoration – Bringing Waimarie Back to Life

In 1993, a passionate group of volunteers embarked on an ambitious mission to salvage and restore the sunken paddle steamer. After six years of dedicated work, the Waimarie was fully restored and relaunched on January 1, 2000, celebrating the new millennium with a return to service.

Today, the Paddle Steamer Waimarie continues to delight passengers, offering scenic cruises along the Whanganui River, sharing stories of the past, breathtaking views, and a true step back in time.

Step aboard the Waimarie and relive New Zealand’s riverboat era—book your Whanganui River cruise today!

What a truly memorable experience ! I particularly enjoyed the commentary which answered many of my questions...and the crew were more than happy to answer the rest. The scenery is spectacular and passer bys in rowing boats or those relaxing on the bank waved us hello...I will certainly return to Whanganui when I next visit NZ from Australia...great restaurants and wonderful markets but best of all?..the friendly people of NZ ...

Riverboat travel is a relaxing way to go, but even more so to the soothing chuff chuff of a steam engine. It is a tribute to the hard work by so many people that this wreck, salvaged from the river mud, is now a working paddle steamer once again. The trip, for an hour upstream, only ventures briefly into the hills, so the scenery is not spectacular. Most of the voyage is through the outskirts of Whanganui and then between willow-lined banks. Bird life - there are mallard everywhere, a few gulls and shags, plus I saw a spoonbill and several harriers. The loudspeaker commentary is informative, and infrequent enough not to be an intrusion. The crew are willing to answer questions, and curious visitors are welcomed in the engine room. It can be cold on the upper foredeck, it's more sheltered behind the wheel house. I was impressed by the docking at the end of the trip, it seemed a demanding procedure, but the steersman dismissed it as routine.
