Unveil Lake Taupo's Cultural Treasure:

Explore the Ngātoroirangi Māori Rock Carvings on Lake Taupo

Carved directly into the volcanic cliffs overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Taupo lies a unique and captivating sight – the Ngātoroirangi Māori Rock Carvings.

Standing tall for over 40 years, these awe-inspiring figures are more than just art; they’re a powerful symbol of the enduring Maori culture and a window into the region’s rich history.

Crafted by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, the carvings pay homage to Ngātoroirangi, a revered navigator who guided the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa iwi (tribes) to this special place.

Towering over 14 meters (46 feet) high, the central figure of Ngātoroirangi dominates the rock face, his gaze fixed firmly on the horizon.

Surrounding him are smaller figures representing tupuna (ancestors) and kaitiaki (guardians), symbolizing the ongoing connection between the Maori people, their history, and the land.

Unlike traditional Maori rock art, the Ngātoroirangi carvings showcase a unique blend of Maori heritage and modern artistry.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with our experienced and knowledgeable guides. They’ll share fascinating stories about Maori traditions, the significance of the carvings, and the history of the region.
