Often described as the best one day hike in New Zealand, The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 6-8 hour challenging grade hike over Mt Tongariro and it provides an opportunity to experience some of the most scenic, volcanically active areas of the park. Tongariro Expeditions is a transport and hiking company providing services and equipment to prepare you for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We pick up from Taupo, Turangi, Base Camp and Ketetahi.
This option is a return shuttle. We pick you up from your accommodation or from the isite in the morning and take you to the start of the track. In the afternoon we then pick you up from the end of the track and take you back to your pick up location. We give you a map and information sheet and we have hire gear available on the bus in the morning if you need it. Pick up time may vary so you confirm this when you call the day before to check the weather.
Return transport available from Tongariro Base Camp to and from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Tongariro Base Camp is situated next to the Tongariro Holiday Park and is the closest transport base to and from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track. We give you a map and information sheet and we have hire gear available on the bus in the morning if you need it. You are able to park your car all day in this secure car park. Pick up time may vary so you confirm this when you call the day before to check the weather.
The Ketetahi car park option is when you park your car at the end of the track (Ketetahi car park) in the morning and we take you one way to the beginning of the track (Mangatepopo car park). This way you are hiking your way back to your car. No need to rush for or wait for a bus at the end of the day as your car is right there waiting for you. We offer security guards in the summer months.
Tongariro National Park can be subject to unpredictable weather, and conditions can change quickly. It is important that all walkers carry the essentials for their journey across.
As with any alpine environment, the weather can change suddenly and conditions can become extreme.
To ensure your safety please be prepared for any type of weather condition changes – Dress appropiately
Guiding is not common during the summer months as the track is clear and well marked. It is very popular to self guide at this time of year with our map and information sheet to help you along the way. Shuttle only options are the most popular. At this time of the year the side summits are safe to climb.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has only two seasons. Summer and winter. Shuttle only options apply when the track is clear from snow and ice. Once there is snow and ice on the track we no longer offer shuttle only options for safety reason.
When the mountain is covered in snow and ice we offer fully guided packages only. You have a guide per ten people, hiking gear and return transport. The guides lead the way and assist you to keep you safe and to teach you how to use the gear properly. At this time of the year the side summits are not possible to climb.
As the snow melts we offer a track safety package at $130 per person. This still includes gear (Jacket, pants and boots) and transport and a couple of safety staff to make all the decisions for you. You need to bring warm clothes for underneath, food and 2 lires water per person.
Gear is organised on the bus in the morning. You must have your lunch and water organised before you come as there is no where to buy food or water on or around the track.
