Tomo, the captain of Kaikoura Fishing Tours, has years of experience at sea, guiding fishermen and women on fishing adventures along the stunning Kaikoura coastline.
The primary adventure he conducts is a two-hour tour that allows anglers to capture a variety of species, including the infamous crayfish (New Zealand lobster) that are abundant around the Kaikoura shoreline. However, three and four-hour excursions and a full-day excursion are also popular choices
The Maori gave this region the name Kaikoura, which translates to food (kai) and lobster (koura), due to the availability of this food source. Finfish that is simple to capture include sea perch, which are particularly numerous, tasty, and frequently caught two at a time on a double rig leader. In addition to being abundant, blue cod is renowned as one of the best-tasting fish in New Zealand.
Other species, such as Tarakihi, Gurnard, and Groper, are frequently caught, but bringing in the crayfish pots is the highlight for many. When these are brought to the surface, they typically contain crayfish. You then assist in re-baiting the Craypot, sorting and measuring the crayfish (following New Zealand fishery rules), and taking some home.
There are no guarantees when it comes to fishing, but you will most likely bring home one of these beautiful crustaceans for dinner!
Upgrade your fishing adventure trip to a full-day deep sea cruise for the chance to catch Groper, (Hapuku), Blue Nose, and Sharks if you are a serious angler. Giant Groper lurk at a depth of 250 metres and are easily detected with the fishing equipment and baited lures we use. It’s your chance to catch the largest fish of your entire life! Hapuku may weigh up to 40 kilogrammes, are exciting to capture, and are delicious to eat.
Whether you choose a 2, 3, 4, hour or full-day excursion, your fish will be filleted, bagged, and ready to take with you upon departure. The deckhand of Tomo’s vessel is responsible for baiting hooks, untangling lines, and removing fish from hooks.
Tomo has the extensive fishing experience and is a classic Kiwi bloke! With a dry sense of humour and a desire to provide you with the most excellent fishing experience possible, Kaikoura Fishing Tours promises you a fantastic day.
